Sleep Cool on a New Mattress Designed For Men

Men are fast becoming a target for the bed and mattress industry. Even though historically women have been making the bed buying decisions, the industry is now appealing to men’s interests. Beds are no longer only about comfort, reported a September 2009 article in the Wall Street Journal, beds are also about fashionable electronic furnishings. This article described several high tech beds made by Hollandia International and Magniflex that include items such as unique mattresses, integral retractable flat screen TVs, surround sound speakers, plugs for an iPod and a laptop, secure safes, and even wine coolers. Cost is from $30,000 and up.
Too much to spend on a bed? Some very affordable and still very innovative products are also being marketed to help men sleep better. High on the list of men’s preferences are mattresses with muscle recovery properties and innovative cooling technology. Memory foam and latex mattresses can aid in muscle recovery while you sleep. Memory foam naturally conforms to the shape of the body, helping to relieve pressure points and allowing the muscles to fully relax. A latex mattress gives uniform support to the whole body, also allowing the muscles to unwind and relax naturally. The result is a comfortable sleep through the night and waking up feeling fresh and well rested.
Men are also demanding mattresses that allow them to sleep comfortably cool. The Wall Street Journal article quoted a business owner in Mahopca, N.Y., Edward Vitale, who expressed his interest in sleeping cool. “I sweat when I sleep, so I wanted to try to find a bed that would be cooler,” he said. Sleep scientists confirm that Vitale is not alone. All men are likely to sleep warm or hot. Since science suggests that a cooler nights sleep improves the deepness of sleep, it appears that some men are missing a healthy rest at night. To help him sleep better, Vitale bought a mattress with a Cool Sleep mattress cover using thermal regulation technology. It adapts to your body and adjusts the temperature so you sleep comfortably. In addition, the bed industry offers several more options to help men sleep cool. Cool Max mattress covers facilitate sleeping cool with their sweat-wicking quality. Last year, Dormia introduced a mattress that has an outer layer made of three dimensional material that breathes and keeps the body cool. Magniflex and Hollandia International feature mattresses that trap body heat with a built in coolant.
Yet another popular cooling bed product is the Chilipad mattress topper. It measures one half inch in thickness and allows you to easily adjust your sleeping temperature in one degree increments between a wide range of 46 to 118 degrees F. In this way one always has the choice of sleeping either cool or warm. A North Carolina customer commented, “We live in the mountains and in the spring and fall it is hot at night and cool in the morning, and the Chilipad ADJUSTS! Makes you cooler at night and warms you in the morning. What else could do that?”
The sleeping surface of the Chilipad consists only of poly cotton fabric and soft, flexible medical grade silicon tubing. The tubing carries pure water that spreads a cooling or warming influence beneath you. Owners claim that they do not feel the tubing, yet the manufacturer says it will not puncture with normal use and can endure over 500 pounds of weight. In addition, it will easily work on top of a memory foam or latex mattress. The mattress will support but without the heat buildup. Also, there is no EMF (electromagnetic field) near your body. Because EMF has been scientifically shown to weaken health, this is a plus.
Chilipads and some cooling mattresses offer dual zones. One user said, “It is so comfortable and it is great to cool or heat our bed. I like it cool while my wife likes it warm. Good thing she has her own remote.” Finally, no more bedtime disputes about the air conditioner or open windows. Open the window and still each sleeping partner can sleep at their own favorite temperature all night long.
Because you are in control of your bed temperature, Chilipad manufacturers claim you can conserve energy and pay a lower energy bill. In summertime, use less AC, save up to 15 percent in energy costs, and still sleep cool. In winter, use less heat, save heating costs, and still sleep warm. Men are including a Chilipad on fishing and camping trips too, and in RV vehicles.
From “cool” beds with the latest electronic furnishings to technology for sleeping comfortably cool, the bed industry seems more than ever determined to keep men happy and healthy.
