How To Make A Skirt For Your Mattress

A mattress skirt can hide the space under your bed. It can also help give your bed an additional touch of elegance and style. Today, you will learn how to create a mattress skirt from scratch.
Prepare the materials you are going to use. You will need your choice of fabric, thread, a thin elastic band, measuring tape, decorative items, Velcro, a pair of scissors, and a needle or your sewing machine.
Step 1: Measure the perimeter of the bed frame. Get the length and the width of the mattress and write it down on a piece of paper. Also measure the height of the skirt you are going to make.
Step 2: Spread the fabric with its print side down. Get a pencil or a fabric marker and cut out two pieces of fabric with the measurement of the length of the mattress and the height of the skirt. After this step, cut out another two pieces of fabric with the measurement of the width of the mattress and the height of the skirt.
Step 3: Thread the sewing machine or the needle. Take the two longer pieces of fabric and one of the long sides to the size that can fit the elastic band. Use pins to hold the fold in place. You can try folding the seams in so it will not be visible. Make sure you fold it on the side of the fabric with no print. Sew the fabric close to the seams. You should be able to insert the elastic band. Do the same with the other long fabric.
Step 4: For the shorter fabric, sew the end that corresponds to the width of the skirt. Use the same technique as Step 3.
Step 5: Get one of the long fabrics and one of the shorter fabrics. Connect one unstitched side of the long fabric to one of the unstitched side of the short fabric. Fold the fabric on the side of the fabric with no print. Sew them together.
Step 6: Do step 5 to the remaining fabrics.
Step 7: You now have two sets of fabrics. Connect the longer fabric to the shorter end of the other fabric. Sew them together.
Step 8: You now have the skirt. On the ends of the skirt, sew the Velcro on. It will act as the fastener of the skirt.
Step 9: Insert the elastic band. Sew both ends of the elastic band.
Now you can use your mattress skirt. Place it on the box spring and spread the skirt on the sides. Use the Velcro to fasten the sides of the skirt.
